Australia and the United States have their own methods of regulating the safety of foods and food additives which have various similarities and differences. The United States food industry regulated by the Food and Drug Administrates (the FDA) adopts a process known as “GRAS” for determining the safety of novel food additives. This article analyses the GRAS process and how it applies to the use of food additives in Australia and New Zealand.
