Labelling requirements for imported products
The new Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016 (The Information Standard) came into effect on July 1, 2016. Under this Standard, products which are deemed to be “imported” may be subject to lesser labelling requirements, as compared to products from Australia. For example, an imported product will not have to display a kangaroo logo or a bar chart (but may choose to display a bar chart if highlighting the product’s Australian content). If your product does not meet the Information Standard’s definition of grown, produced, made or packaged in Australia, and was brought into Australia as a finished good, then it can be defined as an imported product.
