Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has assessed an application made by Novozymes Australia Pty Ltd to permit the use of subtilisin from a genetically modified strain of Bacillus licheniformis containing the subtilisin gene from Pyrococcus furiosus, as a processing aid in the production of potable alcohol. On 3 December 2020, FSANZ sought submissions on a draft variation and published an associated report. FSANZ received four submissions. FSANZ approved the draft variation on 28 April 2021. The Food Ministers’ Meeting was notified of FSANZ’s decision on 12 May 2021.
