Joe Lederman is the founder and Managing Principal of FoodLegal. He and his team of lawyers and consultants represent many food manufacturers, importers, distributors, brand marketers, retailers and industry associations or groups. Clients also include from allied fields such as complementary medicines, life sciences, agribusiness and farmer-producers.
Joe graduated in Law from the University of Melbourne in 1977, founded the Australian law firm Baldwins in 1986, and is accredited by the Law Institute of Victoria as a Specialist in Business Law. FoodLegal is now the main name of that firm.
In 1998 Joe was appointed as the principal author and contributing editor for the “Food Law” section of “Halsburys Laws of Australia”, published by law publishers Lexis-Nexis (formerly Butterworths). He also edited CCH Australia’s first “Food Safety Guide” at that time.
Joe Lederman has been (2006 – 2009) an Adjunct Professor of Food Law at Deakin University specializing in Food and Nutrition Law. In January 2009, he presented a research paper to the inaugural International Food Law and Policy Symposium of Deakin University.
Joe has written many papers and spoken to numerous industry seminars around Australia and internationally on a wide range of food industry topics. He presented a paper at Expo Milano 2015 to members of the global Food Lawyers’ Network (of which Joe was a foundation member) on nanotechnology in food processing, and has addressed the Australian dairy science industry on health claims for functional foods, and has spoken at the annual conference of Ausbiotech. He has been a keynote speaker at various Food Regulations & Labelling Standards Conferences in Sydney and Melbourne.
As a member of the global Food Lawyers’ Network, Joe has also presented papers in Paris on the legal interfaces between functional foods, special-purpose foods, complementary medicines, dietary supplements and therapeutic goods, and in Cologne, Germany on the law of health claims and nutrition claims in Australia.
Charles is a Principal of FoodLegal, and is the food regulatory and compliance advisor to leading Australian and international food and beverage companies including food regulatory issues and product risk assessment and advice in relation to new product development projects and product marketing campaigns
Sameera Sirisena is a food science researcher at FoodLegal and a researcher in the school of Agriculture and Food, at the University of Melbourne, specialised in food chemistry. She recently received her PhD for studies of plant bioactive compounds including polyphenols, specifically examining their chemistry, bioactivities, bioaccessibility, and colonic fermentation.
Rozita Vaskoska is a FoodLegal scientist and a regular contributor to the FoodLegal Bulletin on a variety of food science topics. Rozita obtained her Master of science in food safety at Wageningen University Netherlands, the European centre for food science and technology. Currently she is doing her PhD research at the University of Melbourne in meat quality and biochemistry. She has international experience and active interest in food technology, food safety, food standards and food policy.
