When is an energy drink not an energy drink? Issues to consider when formulating and classifying beverages

Food businesses looking to formulate and sell beverages designed to energise and enhance mental performance might assume that they must classify their products as formulated caffeinated beverages (or energy drinks). However, the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code actually contains several different classification options. This article addresses some of the important issues beverage manufacturers should have in mind when developing and classifying their products.
