Country of Origin: How relevant is the concept of ‘significant ingredient’?

The Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016 (the Information Standard) became mandatory on 1 July 2018. It created the novel distinction between ‘priority’ and ‘non-priority’ foods and requires them to implement different labelling standards. Another concept created by the Information Standard is that of ‘significant ingredients’ and how that interacts with the other labelling requirements. This article explores the concept of significant ingredients and addresses how significant ingredients are treated differently depending on whether a product is categorised as a priority or non-priority food.
